“Cancer,” the doctor said, and with that one word our lives were propelled into the Twilight Zone. An alternate universe populated by beings with stethoscopes, where medical jargon is the primary language and war is waged against malignant cells. Any illusion of safety we ever entertained was obliterated as we learned new skills like how to live in fear, and deal with looks of pity.
It is a world filled with paperwork and bureaucracy, insurance companies that refuse to pay claims and medical debt that soars to the stars. But, if you can survive it, you get to go home.

Cancer, such a vivid picture of anguish and uncertainty. Your vivid description pulls at the heart, Peggy. My mom died from cancer. I witnessed her last few weeks.

Thanks so much for the comments. Yes, cancer is a most unpleasant subject, but I am betting that there is not a single person here whose life has not been touched by it in some way.
