They would put things in it, usually money, sometimes jewelry, thinking they might get something in return. Once in a while, they did.
When times were tough, the townspeople gave the hole even more. They offered it car titles and property deeds and sometimes even marriage licenses. The hole liked these things well enough. But what it liked most were hopes and dreams.
