Shifting between states of consciousness, I woke up, covered in tubes and needles, surrounded by sounds striking the head like a bell being excited into persistent resonant vibration. Outside the body, bags were hanging over both sides of the bed, collecting blood and urine. My right thumb pressed the button again to release more morphine. Visible through the glass panel, her misty eyes told me she felt the pain too. But she also wore a face beaming with blessedness, in contrast to the fear that overwhelmed us for the past week. “…It’s benign…” came faintly through the panel. And hope.

Profound relief for her, and for me, at the word benign. You set the scene just right, David.
