Between sips of coffee the young man told me he’d just returned from his third tour in Afghanistan. Said he thought he might go back for another. I must have had a look of shock on my face, having flashbacks to my own war in Vietnam. Without me saying a word, he explained that life here in the States had lost its meaning. People here, he said, are superficial, ignorant, stuck in their petty, material lives. But violence, you see, violence has deeper significance. I nodded and said I understood. But I lied. In truth I wanted desperately to cry.

We should cry for all those who been affected by the violence of war, especially those for whom violence has become a meaningful a way of life.
