A uniformed guard entered - the strangers filed out. Johnny followed, along a corridor to a room where, among others, sat his beautiful mother. Now the tears came, “oh mum, I’ve missed you so much.”
Johnny sat alongside his father in the cold waiting room. Emerald tiles covered the walls, a grubby light from the high window fell on silent, sullen strangers – some reading, a few knitting, most staring blankly ahead. Johnny moved closer to his father, his chair shifted – a shrill squeal of metal against concrete ricocheted across the room. Faces glared at him, “keep still lad” father whispered.
