Ping! “R u still in Kharkiv?” the message reads. My windows ring and shake as I watch the building in front catching the blast of fire, coughing with clouds of trash. Like in the movies. I turn and slowly start to pack.

Editor's Choice War day ten. Alone in the house. My phone keeps pouring agitated voices and Caps-Locked texts. Complete strangers ask me if I need a room outside the hell, but the void inside freezes me still. I don’t reply, hardly move, just scroll through the burning Newsline, looking for any safe ledge to grip on in this free fall. Ping! “R u still in Kharkiv?” the message reads. My windows ring and shake as I watch the building in front catching the blast of fire, coughing with clouds of trash. Like in the movies. I turn and slowly start to pack.

Dear Malvina, I know words are not enough but sometimes they are all we have. Hold onto them and to the hope that one day you will make peace with your past and with all that has happened because that is the only way to move forward. I hope you are safe.

Dear Andrea, your words are enough for me to keep on fighting and stay human even in the darkest times. Thank you for finding kindness and courage to say it. It matters.

My heart is with you, Malvina, and the folks of your country. Your story gripped me in your fearful circumstances. I'm glad you turned to pack. I clicked I liked your story. No the subject. Who could. But the story you took the time to tell, so I could feel you and, so we don't here in the west flick to the next, but keep our eyes and our prayers, what ever form they may take on you, and your beloved Ukraine. May God bless and keep you. With much love, Mary.
