HIGHLY COMMENDED SIDERIUS CLASSIC 100-WORD COMPETITION, 2024 The judge stared in disbelief at the jury as the foreman announced the “not guilty” verdict. The jurors looked away, at their feet, the ceiling, anywhere but at the judge or the victim’s family. This case was not a mistrial. Nor was it thrown out on a technicality. How can five eyewitness testimonies, three corroborating CCTV recordings, and overwhelming forensic evidence for this brutal bludgeoning not result in Zagreus Zagato’s murder conviction? The dismayed judge then noticed jurors nodding at Zagato’s rival, Vincent Mangino, grinning from the gallery. This isn’t the first time Mangino promised an expedient and proper execution.

In a world where there is a growing belief that punishment rarely fits the crime, this story contains the blueprint for an alternative to legal justice. The way the system has been manipulated is cleverly handled throughout. The build-up is excellent, adding the evidence piece by piece to increase the bewilderment of the reader as to why the jury failed to convict until bang! The undoubted and effective road to justice is revealed, and the reader is left like Mangino, with a grin upon their face

Interesting parallel tidbit, Vincent Mangano (one letter off from Mangino) was known as "Vincent the Execusioner." Also, in Greek mythology, Zagreus met his end by being killed/dismembered.

On vacation in Amsterdam having a beer. So apologies for misspelling 'executioner' in above comment. Vincent will certainly be on my tail now. Leave a Reply. |
