Marie’s roots dig into her mother’s. The acorn had not fallen far from Esther, finding enough dead things to grow collected on Esther’s large exposed roots. Now, Marie is four inches tall. She is old enough to understand their predicament. One day, Esther will fall and Marie will only survive if she has pushed through her mother’s flesh and grown her roots deep into the ground. Esther encourages her to push deeper every day. Despite the pain, it makes her happy. Her own mother had always said that to be a parent means farming out your happiness. Esther finally understood.
