Arms Open Wide, by Sue Clayton

2/10/2020

She is sightless but her sensitive fingers reach out to touch all who come to pay call.

Bedecked in her finest green and burgundy gown she greets her visitors with arms open wide, her welcome warm and inviting.

Blessed with beauty and fertility…symbols of Venus, the Goddess of Love…for many she holds an aura of mystery.

Her visitors are invited into her domain where she lets down her fine hair before her arms fold them in a firm embrace.

But she does not love.

Clasp your hands together, dear reader. Lace your fingers. See the Venus Fly Trap feeding.

Your story, Sue, encapsulates with beauty the identity of one, the Venus Fly Trap. Words flow gracefully with poignant precision. Well done!

Beautifully written personification of a plant. It isn't a metaphor for a woman, right.?Was the twist that it was a plant, not a woman? The imagery and personal traits of the plant are spectacular.

Wonderful! I love it when an author catches me totally unaware at the end of a story with a twist ending. GREAT job!

The comments of my lovely FFF community always inspire me, and yes, Susan, the twist was that it was a plant not a woman. Thank you all.

    Friday Flash Fiction
    Rules
    Kinda obvious, really...
    • Fiction only
    • Stories of 75-100 words only
    • Don't be nasty or cheat
    • Include your name and a story title

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
