When Hansel and Gretel limped out of the woods, their father fell down and begged for forgiveness. Met with no response, begging turned to bargaining: What will it take? The twins conferred. Hansel wanted their stepmother felled like an oak. Gretel, death still fresh on her trembling hands, shook her head and insisted on something bloodless. But what currency other than blood could pay the price their hearts demanded? In the end, Hansel led his blindfolded father into the trees. Gretel followed behind, shivering in early winter’s chill, casting down crumbs and silently watching hungry birds descend.
