The people being observed noticed the old woman and wished they could trade places, longing for the day they could sit in their garden on a sunny weekday morning, carefree.
On sunny mornings, still in her dressing gown, Edith would hobble from her house, dragging along a folding chair. She'd sit down in her front garden and watch people leaving for work, children going to school and dog walkers heading to the park. Anyone catching her eye was offered a friendly wave. Observing people's comings and goings made her wistful for the days when she'd been a busy working mother.

Funny how it's all a matter of perspective - each longing for what the other has here.
