It is a grim walk to Room 323. “Hello, Caryn. I’m Danielle. Don’t be afraid. You’re as pretty as everybody says.” She fidgets nervously with her wedding band. “I had a long talk with Greg. He’s in love with you. I understand.” Emotion overshadows her composure. “I came to give blood. We told the kids that you’re an old friend. My prayers are with you. If there is anything else I can do….”
Caryn lifts her good hand and squeezes Danny’s. That’s what he calls her—Danny—Danielle—My Wife. Glistening eyes shimmer, rearranging Life—Death—Gratitude—Pain—and Forgiveness.

What an intense moment...well done, Candace.

I think it speaks volumes that it is Danielle that is the visitor and not her husband. Perhaps he is not so in love now that Caryn is no longer perfect.
Wow, Candace, you're definitely on a roll with these stories. This is really good (as were the last). With the mention of "You're as pretty as everybody says," I couldn't help but think of your story, "Responsibility" where the prettiest girl in town was eleven minutes away...but he only had an hour to give.

Danielle is one in a million. Caryn may be pretty but Danielle is the beautiful one whom Greg clearly doesn’t deserve.

Yes, Pamela. Intense indeed. Thanks for commenting. And Peggy, women really seem to resent this guy. You just flat out don't like him and that is as valid a perspective as any. Jim, my friend, thank you for always connecting the dots. I wasn't always this mature. However, in my old age, I'm trying to see that life is more nuanced. Thanks for seeing that.

Yes, Marie. I tried to imagine the awkwardness, but I'm so grateful that I never found myself in either position. And Mercedes, in my original draft, I actually used those exact words. Caryn acknowledged that Danielle is the beautiful one. I had to take it out because I only get a hundred words, but I hope everybody can see that. Meanwhile, you're consistent about Greg. Can't wait to see what everybody else thinks.Thank you both.

What a beautiful person Danielle is and what a great job you did of capturing this emotionally intense in so few words. I especially loved the way you used the words at the end to reflect the title and give the image of emotions churning and turning and fragmenting the way colors in a kaleidoscope do. Outstanding!

Thank you, Eunice. You so eloquently expressed what I couldn't in a hundred words. Your interpretation is exactly what I hoped for. I am humbled.

Candace, I had to keep coming back to this story until I got it-- it was the "sequel" to last week's story. What a powerful end (if it is the end -- now I'm wondering about Greg's next move). There are more questions... I didn't look at the comments until now, and I feel the same way as Jim and the other commenters.

Very well done Candace. I had to read it a couple of times to let it soak in. A powerful story.

Love takes many forms. It reveals what is inside one's heart that often gets lost in words; a subtlety speaks volumes. Comments are closed.
