Scenes From A Shower, by Giulietta Nardone

25/11/2022

Elaine kept pulling back the shower curtain, checking to make sure some deranged mama’s boy wasn’t about to julienne her with a kitchen knife. She’d conducted this crazy ritual since watching Psycho in a college film class.

After reading an article on OCD, she decided it was time to shake off that tradition. What were the odds of someone breaking into her apartment?

Actually, quite high.

He snapped back the curtain, dragged Elaine onto the tile floor and attempted to carve her into a heap of tenderloin.

A surprise awaited him.

Elaine had obsessively hidden knives all over the bathroom.

Sometimes the paranoia does pay off in the end :)

Rashna, appreciate the read. Elaine is a paranoid, but well-prepared person!

Better safe than sorry. I was spooked after watching Psycho. Preferred water over the floor than closing the shower curtain.

Thanks Sue. That movie definitely altered folks habits.

Oh my! How the knife story truly ended for Elaine remains unknown. Eek!

That movie has been stuck in my head for years. While I was reading your story, Elaine looked a lot like Janet Leigh.
Nicely done.
Liked the strong ending of Elaine determined not to be a victim.

Arlene, Thanks for reading it! It is that kind of movie. Just can't stop associating it with showers.

Well, Hitchcock just had the tables turned on him. A sly, subversive tale. Well done!

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a larger number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish the later ones EARLIER around 4.00 am. On the rare occasions where there are more than 50 stories, we'll post an even earlier set, probably around 2.00 am UK time.
