Inside, etched into the concrete, I find a name and the year 1941. I trace the letters with my finger. I fancy I can hear the jokes, curses, gossip and tall tales told by the young soldiers who stood guard here.
The threat of invasion has long passed. Those young men are gone too, claimed by the sands of time that wear away, piece by piece, the brick, mortar and concrete of their forgotten sentry posts.
