Members of the Board of Directors visited twice a year to a red-carpet reception during the school festivities. But neither they nor the school principal or vice-principal were as popular or well-respected in the campus as the tough, easy-going, and pot-bellied Bala, a Class IV employee who was sometimes a bodyguard, sometimes a driver, sometimes a peon, sometimes a truant-catcher, and sometimes something miscellaneous else.
