A Date with the Internet, by Sandra James

31/7/2020

After years of loneliness, my friends finally persuaded me to join an internet dating site.

“No excuses,” they said. “You’ve got time on your hands now to put a profile together and get to know someone from the comfort of your lounge room. Then when isolation ends you can meet.”

I listed my good points, hopes and dreams; found a complimentary photo.

Alas, the contenders seemed like clones! Each masked something unrelated to Covid-19. Could I trust again? I’d been hurt by a cheating liar before.

Eventually I changed sites; adopted a Cocker Spaniel.

You're never lonely with a dog who won't cheat on you or care what you look like. But you could try again when masks are no longer need to be worn. Great piece, Sandra.

Best of all they listen to your stories and always wag their tales! Thanks, Sue :)

Choose the dog, they're loyal and they won't steal your chocolate. Well done.

Thanks Mary! Dogs, cats, chickens, guinea pigs or all of the above- they win hands down!

Good choice. Pandemic or not. ;-)
Nice little story.

Thanks Jim! A bit of fun. Here in Victoria, Australia we all have to wear masks from Monday after a huge increase in infections. Gives the idea of a 'blind date' a whole new meaning.

Your story made me smile.

Thanks Pamela :) When we write something there's nothing nicer than finding out it made someone smile! Except perhaps a multi-figure book contract...but I'll aim for that next week :) lol

    "Classic"
    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
