A soldier after the Great War couldn't come home until the stores he guarded were depleted, the stores in question being fifty tons of Epsom Salts.
In order to get released from duty a little earlier, he took to transporting a few sacks at night in a wheelbarrow and dumping them into the local village well.
This enabled him to come home and be released from his war service!
