A Precious Life, Padmini Krishnan

9/10/2020

There were three men on the farm. One of them stood near a lame horse, gun in hand. The other two, holding sharp knives, followed a rooster. One of the guys dived towards the rooster. Just then, the hens and chicks inside the cage groaned together, as if sick. The man looked up, loosening his hold on the rooster. The hens flapped their wings, beating their cage. With a last burst of inspiration, the rooster flapped his wings and flew over the fence, disappearing into freedom. The horse stared after the rooster, longing in his eyes.

Oh Padmini, what a great story! I was cheering for the hens and the rooster although my eyes misted for the poor horse. Very well done :)

I am glad you liked and empathized with this story, Sandra. Thank you so much.

Sandra summed it up perfectly. I can hear the rooster's full-throated cock-a-doodle-do.

Poor horse! Oh dear!

We (humans) always make decisions for the animals, don't we? Don't know how ethical it is to shoot an unfit horse... Thank you for commenting, Pamela.

Poetic and moving with a smooth ending.

A sad, though somehow hopeful tale. I found myself cheering for the animals and hoping more of them escaped!

Sad story for people who love animals and birds. For others, it's just part of farm life.

True, Susan. Thank you for taking the time to read.

I'm not sure what to add - the other wonderful comments sum up my thoughts - a hopeful (and sad for the horse) tale, or another day at the farm. For now, I take hopeful.

How clever of those hens to create a distraction. Great example of personification.

Padmini, you always know how to pull our heart strings. Kudos to the freedom fighting rooster and hens. Condolences for the horse.

Lovely little story. I wish the horse had managed to escape too, but unfortunately happy endings aren't always realistic.

True. Have left it to your imagination on how the horse would escape:) Thank you so much, Mary, for the comment.

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
