Banned, by Don Tassone

12/5/2023

It started with a book about an ugly chapter in history. It was in a school library. A parent of one of the students objected, and the school removed the book.

Soon other books were removed from other libraries. Then from bookstores too. Publishers stopped putting out anything that might offend, and authors stopped writing anything that might not get published.

Then social media companies began rejecting content that might be controversial, and people stopped posting anything of substance.

In time, written communication faded away, and people reverted to telling stories orally, as in the Dark Ages.

Keep writing, Don T. Bless you.

Our institute's library got raided in Saudi once, by the morality police. One of our students had stitched us up.

Sadly, I wonder if we are headed this way. Well done, Don!

Is it fear that drives book banning? Fear of loss of control? Will oral communication be reduced to whispering out of fear of punishment? Thank you Don for stimulating the thought.

I feel like this is happening right now. It is only a matter of time.

Well written, Don. Stay in the cave, there's dinosaurs out there!

Censor squad leader #3 here.
Just to let you know - we'll be keeping an eye on you, Don Tassone.

Nicely done, Don

Nothing will ever stop stories from being told.
Good work, Don.

Thank you all. From Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451: "You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them."

Though there seems to be a lack of civility in society today, politely stated opinions should not be banned. Freedom of thought and expression must be preserved.

Amen. Thanks, Pamela.

It's been said that the past is prologue. On May 10, 1933, a massive book burning took place in towns across Germany, sparking the Nazi war on "un-German" individual expression. Well done, Don.

Yes. Thank you, Dee.

And eventually those stories will be written down, to be read in an environment where literary censorship no longer exists.

Let us hope. Thanks. Sue.

    Friday Flash Fiction
    Rules
    Kinda obvious, really...
    • Fiction only
    • Stories of 75-100 words only
    • Don't be nasty or cheat
    • Include your name and a story title

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
