Be Afraid, by Sue Clayton

17/7/2020

“Sit in the chair, please,” his gentle tone belies sinister intent. Instruments of pain gleam and glisten.

Under the intense glare of a bright, white overhead light the torturer’s shadow looms large, waiting to inflict unbearable anguish.

“Please…I…don’t…” I force myself down onto the cold brown leather, eyes darting towards the door. Dare I make a break?

Too late; his masked face hovers over my own and I feel the needle sting as he injects the drug. My fate is sealed.

“Open wide.” The drill whines and the dentist begins to fill my tooth.

Ouch! A perfect description of a visit to the dentist.

True; I too dread a visit to the dentist.

The twist is just wonderful! A well crafted tale that makes you show your teeth at the end. Loved it.

A cute story, Sue. Thank you for reminding me of my dental visit two days ago.

Love the twist at the end to this tale of ‘torture’.
Well done, Sue!

Fear has big eyes. I read with great fear to see what happens. WOW! Thank God, the ending is great. I have my experience with the dentist. I'll post it here next Friday! You challenged me nicely, Sue! Thank you!

It's a Conradian horror to submit yourself to a root canal treatment. How difficult to re-member and re-live the pain once undergone with clenched fists. Hats off Sue!

Thank you everyone. Just after I submitted this piece to FFF a corner of a tooth chipped off so now I have to face my greatest phobia.Be afraid, be very afraid of synchronicity.

I can't bear the the smell of anything related to dentistry. I really enjoyed the tension build-up, from the beginning to the end.

Thanks so much Phyllis, Stella and Teddy. Guess we all hate the tooth doctor. It was so much easier as a child when all we had to worry about was whether or not the tooth fairy would come.

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
