The woman’s voice was heavy with grief and she wept quietly, afraid that her sobs would hurt her son. Far away the young man heard a soothing voice that he felt he should know but could not place, the smell of lavender and a whisper in his ear, “It’s me baby, everything is going to be okay, don’t be afraid.” Sleep overcame him and he could only hear the warbled sounds as if coming from underwater or muffled. His body twitched and pain shot through his chest. The blood pressure monitor went up, instantly the pain was gone.
