PART
Dad showed up for their first date wearing a white suit and driving a white car - impressive for the 1930’s! My grandfather had realized that you couldn’t make it on the Jewish East Side, so decided to move to Pennsylvania where he started off selling “alteh/zachen” old merchandise on a wagon. Later he bought a grocery store which eventually became a warehouse/department store.
Mom’s family was so poor that the bank was about to foreclose on their house. Dad, like a white knight, salvaged the mortgage. Their January wedding and honeymoon in an icy white Niagara Falls – how fitting.
