Comparing Notes, by Gordon Lawrie

16/10/2020

Later, they rose and showered. As they soaped each other down, they compared notes, something they'd done earlier in their marriage before falling out of the habit. She adored it when he massaged her back. For all its restrictions, lockdown had its consolations, one of which was the opportunity to rediscover intimacy with a loved one.

After towelling each other down, they shared a warm final embrace and they were both tempted to start all over again. But lunchtime was over and it was back to working from home on the afternoon shift. Tomorrow's date was in the diary already.

I could feel the slippery soapy moisture as I fell deep into your shower scene, Gordon, but living in a drought region, where four minute showers are the norm, intimacy would just flow down the drain.

“Intimacy with a loved one”, whether in a shower or not, is a newfound treasure in many a pandemic relationship. Perhaps not enough to reverse the pandemic trend of rising requests for divorce, upon finding new traits people can’t live with.

How wonderfully you bring home the message that every cloud has a silver lining ...

A positive glimpse into the world of lockdown, inspiring with a smooth ending.

You forgot to mention the fight 2 minutes later, about who's turn it was to put the kettle on. I'm a bit of a cinic.

Also funny!

Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments. I can see no down side at all to setting aside a little time each day to share a little "intimacy with a loved one", in whatever form that takes. Especially just now.

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
