Dinosaur, by Don Tassone

9/2/2024

Gordon's Choice
The young woman ahead of me ordered a “Quad Venti White Mocha Frappuccino.” Somehow, she paid by holding up her cell phone.

I stepped up and said, “A small, black coffee, please.”

“Blonde, medium or dark?”

“Which one is the strongest?”

“Dark.”

“I’ll take that.”

“That’ll be $2.75.”

I handed her a five. She made a face as she took it with her fingertips.

As I sat down and opened my book, I looked around. Everyone was on laptops. Most wore earbuds. No one said a word.

I left and went to the library, where I could hear people whisper.

I suspect many of our readers will want to jump up and yell, "I'm Dinosaur!" – Editor

I'm sure there are a bunch of us who would feel like a dinosaur in that cafe.

Happy to be a dinosaur! Great story, Don.

Yep - another dinosaur here to add to your fellow writers, Don.

I'm a bit of a dinosaur, but an avian modern one, the best of both worlds.

I'm sitting in the waiting room at the garage getting a new tyre fitted, and (mostly) trying to finish a first draft on my phone.

Thank God they at least whisper in the library! You have portrayed the modern day well, Don.

So proud to be a dinosaur! Thanks, Don, for helping us to know we are okay and not alone!

When the man in the hoodie demanded all the money in the cash box, he looked around at the patrons with their bent heads and earbuds, shrugged and ordered a Cappuccino to go. Your message is loud and clear, Don. Thanks for the reminder.

The quad venti white mocha frappuccino is the new the new small black coffee...... so well done Don.

Yesterday, I sat in the waiting room while my wife was getting a blood test - there were 8 of us in total. 6 had their faces buried in their phones, one older gentleman and myself reading. He caught my eye and gave me the secret dinosaur wink, and we smiled.
Nicely done, Don

Great last line. I'm still reading books and using pen and paper.

Interesting! Outside of the library, people were silent; inside, they were whispering. Isn't it satirical, Don?

An excellent story, Don. Congratulations. Things have changed at my local library. Whisperers are the dinosaurs. Most people talk as if they are outside where workers are using jackhammers.

I'm one of the non-dinosaurs - hanging at the cafe with my laptop and earbuds - and get really annoyed when people talk in the library :o)

I loved this story though because of the way it flowed - well done.

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a larger number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish the later ones EARLIER around 4.00 am. On the rare occasions where there are more than 50 stories, we'll post an even earlier set, probably around 2.00 am UK time.
