Distraction, by Don Tassone

10/2/2023

Over open water, the mysterious balloon was shot down.

But then other balloons appeared. Blimps and dirigibles too. Soon airships of all sorts dotted the skies.

Surely they’ll be banned, everyone thought. But the airships were perfectly legal, and they multiplied, and the world was transfixed.

But as all eyes turned skyward, people lost sight of their surroundings, the people and things that needed their care and attention, the earthly stuff of their everyday lives, until at last everyone lowered their gaze and once again focused on what was right in front of them, and the skies cleared.

True; the modern technology has been distracting our attention from our everyday lives. Very timely, Don.

How necessary it has become to be vigilant of our surroundings and not lose sight of what's right in front of us.

We can only hope that your brief story reveals
wisdom to many individuals who have their
eyes in the skies. Well done...as usual, Don.

You mean, in the end they went back to looking down at their phones? And no longer knew if it was cloudy or clear, if birds flew overhead or not.

Your story has sparked my imagination and sharpened my sense of awe. I will behold the clear blue sky even more while I can.

Perhaps, if we did not pay attention to some of the distractions in the political world, they would wither away. In some places, the distractions are solutions for which there is not a problem.

And then came the drones.

A distraction a day keeps the reality away.

Nicely done, Don

Thank you all. We are easily distracted, aren't we? I'm glad you liked this metaphor.

Looks like your Magic Eight Ball was right on target Don. Please forward this piece to the Gang of Eight and the White House. We are not into the clear sky portion of the episode yet.

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
