Do You Know Your Neighbour? by Yola M. Caecenary

6/11/2020

It is a question that has struck me lately. Do I know my neighbour? I only know the person as he; when he opens his door, he opens it as if he were at war; based on the running water I hear, he takes a shower before midnight twice to three times a week; not a night owl as I can hear his snores while my mind and heart still talking to each other way postmidnight; I hear some farts at several nights that make me wonder how thin our wall is.

Today, two police lines are blocking his doors.

I really like your use of ambiguity. Did someone he was "at war" with shoot him? Were the farts gunshots?

Hi, Susan! Thank you for reading. Also for the questions of possibilities that what might happen. Those enriched the story because none of those was the premise.

Nicely done, Yola. I am intrigued. Perhaps a follow up is waiting to be told?

Thank you, Marjan, for reading it.
I don't know... I might make the sequel for this. 🙂 Thanks again for your nice thought.

In this case, Yola, maybe ignorance was bliss..well done!

Too much nighttime noise, not enough sleep, I believe he/she killed him, Yola. Perhaps the smell of the farts filtering through the thin wall was the last straw.

Tell us more. I don't think we ever know another person really well.

Hi, Mary!
Couldn't agree more...

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
