My favorite aunt was on her deathbed. She looked terrible. I never expected her to shrivel-up into nothing. She was always so healthy and full of energy. When I looked at her in the hospital bed, it was the first time I saw anyone dying. Death was in her eyes—deep-set, black, and hollow. I was too upset to hear her say that it was okay, and death was only a one-way trip to some exotic destination. Instead of seeing her off and wishing her well, I said something I regretted, “You're going to get better.”

Deathbed words can never be unspoken. Your piece makes for a good lesson in how we should hold our tongues, or just say goodbye.

It's like trying to find a card for a terminally I'll person. Get well soon, just doesn't cut it. Comments are closed.
