In eighth grade I hung out with Charlie and Mort—we’d get into trouble together. Charlie later dealt blackjack for a decade at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas. For twenty years thereafter he wrote specifications for water purification systems. He got married and divorced, drove the big rigs, and now deals in Vegas again. Mort, a math whiz, disappeared after high school. I last saw him in the mid-1960s putting the make on a sales girl in a department store. I heard he later owned several fast-food franchises in West Virginia. I don’t know how reliable that information is.
