At first, I thought the girl was swearing. She pushed a red paper bag in my face and took money with the efficiency typical of customer services in the politest of societies. Early January in Tokyo marked the time when normally rational people queued for hours to buy a mystery bag. Originally, a way for department stores to rid themselves of surplus stock, now the craze had spread to fast food restaurants and shops serving more adult tastes. I knew better than to post the contents of MY bag on social media – unless I wanted to get arrested for indecency.
