I asked if it hurt.
He said yes, it hurts like hell.
His eyes fluttered and he fell asleep.

I remember visiting Dad after the operation. He loved the details of any process. Propped up in the bed, he said, “They sliced open my chest and sawed my rib cage down the middle.” He ran his finger from his neck down to his stomach and smiled. “Then they pried back my ribs, and to keep the ribs from snapping closed they have these braces like a fireman’s ‘jaws of life’. Pretty amazing if you think about it.”
I asked if it hurt. He said yes, it hurts like hell. His eyes fluttered and he fell asleep.
