Here Comes the Rain, by Sankar Chatterjee

Temperature hovering 50–55˚C, it had been a brutal summer for past several months; no relief in sight. A dramatic climate-change happened causing ground cracking, rice and corn plants languishing, and farm animals dropping dead.

She had no choice. With other women, she trekked several kilometers under a scorching sun to pray at this mountaintop holy temple. To her, humans took no care of Mother Nature, thus the punishment. Also, what good were those smartphone apps? Suddenly, a water droplet touched her nose. Above, a monstrous cloud gathered bathing nature in mesmerizing colors with refracted rays.

Then the monsoon started.

Praise be! We're at 40 degrees C here and I just got baked going to the grocery store. 50+ is just debilitating. You convey the picture of such temperature well, Sankar.

I love your photos, Sankar. Is Sinjinee a relative.

I'm glad her faith was rewarded - may it always be so! Lovely atmospheric photo as well.

A little prayer can bring a deluge of an answer. I experienced 50+ heat one day in Dubai. Can't imagine surviving a summer of such heat.

Hello Sue:
The climate-change appeared in different forms worldwide. The Indian subcontinent just experienced months-long heat-bomb, while past winter there was not a single flake of snow in many American cities.
Many thanks for reading the piece and sharing your own experience.

Best,
Sankar

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
