Humpty Dumpty Did Not Sit On A Wall, by Sue Clayton

26/5/2023

Humpty had been philandering at the nearby hen coop.

“Been at it again, haven’t you, Hump?” Mrs Dumpty lamented. “Searching for a fresher egg, more golden and speckled than me.”

She bashed Humpty’s head with a metal spoon, cracked him wide open, just like you’d crack a boiled egg with soldiers.

All the King’s horses rushed to the crime scene, but Humpty was a well-rounded egg and his yolk flowed in abundance. All the King’s men couldn’t put him together again.

Hapless Mrs. Dumpty was arrested, duly sentenced by a jury of a dozen eggs to become scrambled.

Both Humpty and Dumpty seem to have got what they deserved, Sue.

An eggsistential mistake by Mr D., but the yolk was on Mrs D. Charged with battery & now she is no longer free range. A fowl outcome all round. Fun story Sue!

A bad egg, that Mrs. Dumpty, but an egg-cellent tale, Sue!

Humorous comments all round. Thanks everyone. Boiled egg with soldiers is one of my favorite breakfasts.

How do you like you're eggs in the morning?/ I like mine with a kiss.
I guess not this time. A cracker!

    "Classic"
    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
