‘You said the sea was your mistress!’ she replied.
‘It is, but I’d never survive.’
She turned her beautiful face away and gazed at the horizon, the sun was setting in a blaze of orange, red and gold.
The mermaid leapt from the Fisherman’s boat and plunged into the water, her legs reverting to a tail.
‘I’ll never forget you.’ she said.
‘Will I see you again?’
‘No.’
The mermaid disappeared below the surface and for the first time in his life he cursed the day he’d cast his net.
