In the Moment, by Don Tassone

17/11/2023

Herman sat in the shade of a maple tree and thought about his life. At 101, he could sometimes still remember things from long ago.

Now he remembered skinny-dipping in a farm pond on a hot summer day. He smiled and wished he could live his life all over again.

But then he remembered losing his mother as a boy, fighting in a war and losing his daughter and eventually his wife.

Then Herman’s memories all faded, and he looked around. What a beautiful day. He wasn’t sure where he was, but he was very happy to be there.

So much said with so few words! That's a skill to master in life. Thanks, Don, for another life view!

In the Moment, indeed. Nicely told, Don.

A gentle passing. Some things last forever.

The present moment can be the best moment. At any age. Thank you, Don, for reminding us to appreciate what we have instead of lamenting, what is gone.

It's a gift to see the forest through the trees. This reminds me not to wait until I'm old to use that gift. Lovely, Don.

Love that last line.

Being present in the present can be a struggle, but its own reward
Nicely done
Jim

Herman is experiencing a temporary respite from all the pain he suffered. It is nice that he gets to relax and enjoy the beautiful day.

Living in the moment, and appreciating it, is true serenity.

I love the sense of balance in this story, Don -the good past, the bad past, and a final settling on the present.

    Friday Flash Fiction
    Rules
    Kinda obvious, really...
    • Fiction only
    • Stories of 75-100 words only
    • Don't be nasty or cheat
    • Include your name and a story title

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?

During competitions, however, it seems fairer to disable this option. Normality soon!
