Jane had been surprised when Carlos called. The word around town was that he and Alice had something going. Still, she had agreed to meet him for coffee. They had enjoyed a pleasant chat, but there was obviously no spark.
Men could be so, well, puzzling. Whatever happened to Kevin, for instance? He had dropped into her life – and her car – so unexpectedly, and dropped out just as quickly. Maybe she shouldn’t have left him in Wichita, but it had seemed right at the time.
Life could be simpler without romantic complications.
But at least she didn’t have a cat.
