When the doorbell sounded, tears came into Alice’s eyes. They were here; it was time to go. They were very kind and gentle as they pushed her wheelchair out to the van with the sign Hillsdown Hospice on the side.
Alice was confused. Her family gathered round her, trying to explain why she must go. She’d lived in the house for seventy-five years. Why did she have to leave it now? She listened to their words of explanation but could make no sense of them. Why would she better off in “the other place”?
