Living, by Sandra James

24/9/2021

‘How’s your Dad?’

‘Oh, I’m really angry with him! He’s gone to the pub for a beer with his mates.’

‘Is that so bad?’

‘Well, you know the doctor said his time is limited. They’ve done all they can with surgery and chemo; they don’t know how long but…’

‘What would you rather he did? Sit at home, wrapped in cotton wool and drinking green smoothies?’

‘No, but…’

‘He’d be miserable. And he’d only be existing. Perhaps it’s better to live; doing what he enjoys will make him happier, and maybe even healthier.’

‘You’re right! Let’s go join him.’

Good attitude. Go out with a bang and doing what you enjoy.
Live life.

Thanks, Jim. None of us really know how we'd act in a similar situation unless we're faced with it. I hope I'd be like 'Dad' or as a daughter let him live as this one eventually did. :)

I totally agree with Jim.

I loved this. I think we could all benefit by remembering that time for us all is short. Live the life you have, don't simply exist. Your story resonated deeply with me.

Thank you, Diane! As we get older we hear about more and more family/friends and acquaintances facing similar situations and it does make one ponder what we would do. Never easy!

Better to live indeed. Nicely done Sandra.

I agree Bill! Once all possible treatments have been done whatever time is left is surely best spent living. Thanks :)

When my mom was well into her 90's she loved her chocolate bars. We always indulged her.

I'm glad you did, Jennifer and I'm sure your mother appreciated it. My mum is 85 and has suffered Alzheimer's for many years. My dad always gives her the chocolate she likes cut into small, manageable pieces. She can't communicate but her enjoyment is obvious :)

Live life to the max. Eat chocolate, drink beer, wine and spirits, do whatever turns you on. You don't know what's available on the other side so make the most of what's left to you on this side.

Ha, ha! I was reminded of saving-room-for-dessert, not overeating on the first course etc :) It's bad enough when the supermarket runs out of my favourites - what if they aren't available on the other side? Thanks, Sue!

I can definitely relate to your story, Sandra. Well done.

Whatever time is left, let him enjoy it. Nice story, Sandra.

I agree, Sivan. Not easy for either one but the possibility of more happy memories if they can share the things he loves for a bit longer :)

Agree with everyone in the comments' section. It is best to do what you like after all treatment options have been exhausted.

Thanks, Padmini. Yes, it comes down to quality, not quantity in the end. And, that time would be precious, unlike a sudden death.
