I once heard Papa tell Uncle Jim that loving Mama was like flossing his teeth with piano wire and then rinsing with vinegar. I always wanted to know what he meant by that, but I never had the guts to ask.
Mama didn’t have to yell. She didn’t need to say a word. It was the way her lower lip curled downward and her eyes took on this intense stare that made people all jittery. It had the hair rising up on the back of their necks and got us rowdy hillbilly kids to straighten up and act right.
