I recently purchased a new and relatively inexpensive watch. It doesn't tick, it doesn't tock like a regular old-fashioned windup timepiece. It's a quartz watch, and has a small round battery, gleaming silver. It runs but makes no sound. It's very irritating: There should, one would think, be ticks and tocks--but, NO!--there is only silence from the damned thing. Only infuriating silence. The hands move, silently, mutely, inexorably indicating the passage of time. Time, ah time--how frustrating you are when measured by a silent watch such as mine.
