This, he explained, would logically be most possible where there was no one to love, since a ‘loved one’ could only degrade the purity of love.
To demonstrate this, Phisophilopides locked himself in solitary confinement for his entire life, focusing instead on loving an imaginary Plutonian he could never meet. This, he declared, was the greatest love: plutonic love.
