As she dumped the last of the glass into the bin, Laura grinned with satisfaction like she was five all over again.
The sound of glass shattering startled her. ‘That damned cat!’, Laura thought as she started sweeping. She had detested that vase for as long as she could remember. In fact, one of her earliest memories was that damned raffle where instead of the beautiful ‘celestial blue’ dress she won this ugly pot. She was five and that was a tragedy. Forty something years had passed and there it still was, disappointing as ever, incessantly mocking her … until today!
As she dumped the last of the glass into the bin, Laura grinned with satisfaction like she was five all over again.

I think we've all got one like that! 'Aunty Nellie's dish' was an aberration which dear old Aunty Nellie must have thought cute, decorated with a cucumber, a tomato and a....? Never worked out if it was a lettuce or a cabbage. Logic dictated the first option, the artist depicted closer to the second. Couldn't bring myself to smash it or give it away but it went to every school fair, every fete with cake or buns, and always, someone would chase after me waving the wretched thing. Funnily enough, when one day I realised it had disappeared, I felt quite sad - Aunty Nellie had not long passed away. Comments are closed.
