Papa's Gone Fishin', by Doug Bartlett

16/10/2020

Ernie loved the great outdoors and today he was aboard a fishing boat on the open sea, being tossed about by turbulent waves and the thrust of salty air pressed against his face.

He was loving every minute of it.

He snagged a marlin and was in for the fight of his life. Three hours later he emerged the victor.

He was so excited to get home and write about his recent adventure that when they docked he had left his fishing gear onboard.

Santiago, a crew member, realized this and shouted out,” Senor Hemingway, stop! You’ve forgotten your gear.”

The Old Man and the Sea. A great Hemingway tale well-portrayed by you, Doug.

I guess most of us recognized the marlin and Santiago before we reached your punchline. You have endorsed the arrogance of being well-read. Aaah!

Apparently I'm not the only one in this crowd that is "well-read". Thank you Candace for taking the time to read and comment.

Ah! Good one Doug - didn't see the end sneaking up on me.
Didn't realize old Ernie got so excited about his writing ;-)

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
