Dr. Pembroke told Glen the week before about the new procedure: They were going to try a complete transplant of both his eyes. The operation had worked successfully on several animals, including chimps.
Glen, who lost both eyes in a firefight in Iraq, could hardly believe his good fortune.
Dr. Pembroke stopped in to see Glen, as the blind soldier lay in bed, to wish him luck.
“You, too, Doc,” Glen said, smiling broadly. “It’s gonna work just fine—I know it will!”
As the doctor turned to go, Glen called out:
“I’ll be seeing you, Doc!”
