‘Sorry?’
‘None at all.’
She shifted slowly in the bed.
‘You were my greatest project.’
‘Project? Mum, what are you talking about?’
‘The only project I gave my whole heart to. The only project I saw through to the end.’
‘So… not an ongoing project?’ He laughed weakly.
His children shrieked with laughter as they ran through the garden sprinkler.
‘Have I upset you?’
‘No.’
‘Caroline? The kids?’
‘No.’
‘The dog?’
‘Don’t disappoint me.’
He shook his head.
‘Are you tired?’
‘A little.’
‘I’ll leave you in peace then.’
He kissed her and closed the door.
