In the sixth grade, several boys in our class stole goodies from a pantry in the cafeteria. Apparently, they did this over several weeks, right after school, when the cafeteria was closed. One afternoon, the janitor caught them in the act.
The boys knew they could be expelled. Scared, they admitted everything.
“Are you sorry?” the janitor asked.
“Yes,” they said.
Instead of reporting them, the janitor made them “pay restitution” by replacing all the stuff they’d stolen.
He knew this story would get out. Until then, we’d never heard of restitution. Afterwards, none of us would ever forget it.
