Shame, by Don Tassone

1/12/2019

Shame. Day and night, he bears it like a cross. He cannot cast it off, cannot free himself from the awful burden of his offense.

Years ago, he went too far. At the time, it made sense. There was a gap in his life. He was simply filling it.

And so he did something he knew was wrong but felt so right, and he enjoyed it. But illicit joy is always fleeting, and soon he was left with only regret.

The one he had wounded forgave him long ago. But he cannot forgive himself, and that is the real shame.

I liked the way you captured his remorse.

Unforgiveness is unforgiveable even when it's aimed at self. I've met someone like this guy. I'm wondering if he is feeling remorse or taking the role of punisher on himself in an attempt to play a god role.

Peppermint may have nailed it. Isn't there something egotistical about self-hatred?

Egotistical is a descriptive word for it, Kathy. In a perverted way it says, "My sin is greater than God's forgiveness" and the person seems proud of that.

Congratulations, Don for making the Christmas Competition's 2019 short list. A wonderful thought-provoking story. And Merry Christmas.
