The nursing home is permitting visitors at long last. Wearing a face mask, Ann watches her father anxiously from the required distance. She hopes and prays that eyes once filled with mischief, joy, and merriment will soon open and acknowledge her presence.

He sits motionless and it breaks her heart into a thousand little pieces. A wheelchair accommodates his frail body. A fleece shawl covers shoulders that were once strong but now slope to one side.

She yearns to run over and kiss him on the cheek. Then wrap her arms around him and keep him safe.

So be it.

Sad, so sad. My Mum is in a nursing home and Dad can only see her once a week for an hour. Better that she's safe but I do feel for those who might not see their loved one again.

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a larger number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish the later ones EARLIER around 4.00 am. On the rare occasions where there are more than 50 stories, we'll post an even earlier set, probably around 2.00 am UK time.

We have a FACEBOOK PAGE where regular contributors can share ideas and discuss stories. Why not join in?
