Robert carried Beth to the open coffin and said to her, “Isn’t Granny pretty. Tell Granny bye-bye.” Beth leaned towards her grandmother with wide eyes, looked a little longer, tilted her head, and sweetly said, “Nigh nigh, Grammy.”
It is a natural thing for us to bring our two-year old to a funeral. There were a dozen small children with their parents waiting in the line approaching the coffin. Our parents did the same with us; we learned by being exposed to death before our understanding of what it was, that death was a part of life.
