While preparing the Boss’ presentation, Don’s wife suffered a ruptured bowel; she became deathly ill. Don pleaded for time off, but the Boss insisted Don finish the talking points if he wished to keep his position with the company.
“What’ll you do if I fire you?” He delivered this snidely; it was meant to intimidate. "I sympathize about your wife,” the boss continued, “but what about my presentation? Besides, you’re not a medical professional; why do you need to be at the hospital?"
Don left anyway. His wife recovered, but thereafter Don and the boss descended in a death spiral.
