The Candidate, by Doug Bartlett

9/10/2020

This was his first time running for public office. He had no idea how terrible the experience would be.

He was not used to losing and there was no way he could ever let his family down.

It was a hard fought campaign. Lots of money was spent. Mud slinging was rampant. He barely won and it came with a heavy price. He owed lots of people favors and made some promises that would be difficult to keep.

He was extremely proud as they gathered everyone together and announced him the winner and new Treasurer of the fifth grade class.

This is great, Doug. I wonder if this readies him for more, or the battle scars will be a lesson learned.

Take care
Jim

Thanks Jim for taking the time to read and make a comment. I think our friend's political ambitions may be over.

Well done Doug!! It would seem that politics can be similar at every level.

A politician in the making. Let's hope in the years to come he learns the art of diplomacy, economy skills, tact and keeping promises. Although mud-slinging appears to the only subject taught at politician schools.

Thanks Sue for the reading and your comments. Hopefully, someday we may turn the corner on our politician's values.

Many years later and not much is learned. Great little tale Doug.

    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
